About the Home Economics Institute of Australia Dr Janet Reynolds Writing Award

This annual award provides the opportunity for undergraduate and postgraduate students to share their learnings on new developments and research in home economics. Contributions are accepted in the form of academic and research papers, and literature reviews.

Eligibility

The award is open to third- and fourth-year undergraduate students and graduate students studying in home economics and related programs in Australia. Relevant programs include home economics, design and technology, family and consumer studies, clothing and textiles, and nutrition and dietetics.

Topics

The topic may be from any of the subject matter areas within home economics, for example, curriculum, design, environment, family, fashion, food and nutrition, food science and technologies, health, human growth and development, teaching and learning, and textiles.

Prize

One prize will be awarded each year, with the author receiving $500 and a certificate. The winning paper will be published in the Journal of the Home Economics Institute of Australia.

Criteria

The paper will be judged using the following criteria:

1. Content

  • strong opening and introductory statements
  • logical development of the topic
  • strong closing statement
2. Use of literature
  • literature is used to guide/support the content and cited appropriately
  • adequate depth in discussion of results and findings based on the literature use
3. Construction and formatting
  • correct grammar, sentence structure, and paragraph construction
  • follows the HEIA style guide for presentation
  • follows American Psychological Association (APA) 7th edition guidelines for in-text citations and reference list.

    Format

    An annual prize is given for the best original paper of between 2500 and 3500 words (excluding references, tables and figures). Papers must adhere to the HEIA style guide, which includes the use of the APA 7th edition style for referencing.

    Papers must be typed and accompanied by an abstract of no more than 200 words. The author’s identity must not be given on any of the paper’s content pages.

    The paper must be accompanied by a separate identification page with the following information:

    • full title of paper
    • verification by a faculty member that the paper is the original work of the student
    • name of the university program; current year of studies completed/entering
    • name and biographical outline of the author
    • telephone number and e-mail address for contact. 

      Submission process

      Entries are to be submitted as a Word document (not PDF) to heia@heia.com.au.

      Judging

      A panel of judges from the Home Economics Institute of Australia will review the papers. The names of the student author will be withheld from the judges whose decision will be final. Papers will not be returned.

      Announcement of winners

      Winners will be announced after 1 October each year.

      Deadline for submission

      30 July each year.
